GOTHENBURG AS HUB AND TOURIST DESTINATION
Ferry and Passenger traffic has put Gothenburg on the map as an attractive tourist centre. Thanks to the high frequency, it is a valuable freight complement and increases the turnover of goods. Stena Line is the dominating ferry company that due to high frequency is an important ro/ro operator. The Port of Gothenburg owns land and quay facilities and is responsible for operation and maintenance.
TWO NEW SUPERFERRIES
During 2010 and 2011 the world's largest ferries will be taken into service on the route Gothenburg-Kiel. The new passenger and Ro/Pax ferries, Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica, are 240 meter long and have a total load capacity of about 4 100 meters. The first ferry will be taken into service in late August and the second ferry in the beginning of 2011.
The route Gothenburg-Kiel will be merged with Gothenburg-Travemünde, as two vessels will replace the four ferries that currently travel between Gothenburg and Germany.
ENVIRONMENTAL GAINS
The merged route between Gothenburg and Germany will lead to significant reduction of CO2 emissions and noise reduction in the harbour.
INNER HARBOURS WITH CAPACITY
The ferry traffic ships put into the inner harbours, close to the city centre. Stena Line has its head office near the Masthugg Quay. Each year about 2.3 million passengers pass through Gothenburg.
