BERTHS AND FAIRWAYS / PORT DESCRIPTION
- Total number of berths: 151
- Total length of berths (actual; where appropriate, maximum vessel length): 11,955 metres
- Total port land area: approximately 3.6 million square metres
- Maximum depth of water at berth: 20.5 metres (in oil harbours 20.5 metres; in container/ro-ro harbours 14.2 metres; at inner-harbour berths: 8 metres)
During the last years there have been several serious accidents in the Skandia harbour caused by ships with bulb bows.
The Skandia harbour and Älvsborg harbour have so called platform quays, which lays upon pillars of concrete. These pillars are constructed so that they are able to manage large vertical weights. A bulb bow, however, may hit the quay's bearing parts under the water surface. These parts are not constructed for this kinds of horisontal force.
If there is any suspicion that the bulb bow has come under the quay it must be reported to VTS West Coast immediatly. (031-64 77 70) This, in order to prevent serious accidents.

Towing help must be used according to applicable regulations or to the extent decided by the Port Authority in consultation with the master and pilot when vessels are manoeuvred in the harbour.
